Murray has been with the UMS Group since January 2018 as MD for METS and since November 2018 was appointed to the role of COO of UMS Group.

Murray holds an NHD in Mechanical Engineering, a GCC (Mechanical Engineer – Mines) from the Department of Mineral & Energy Affairs and a diploma in Project Management.

He is responsible for growing the footprint of the UMS Groups’ METS MINING, METS PROCESS and SHAFT SINKERS business entities.

Murray has 35 years’ experience in the mining industry and is internationally respected for his shaft sinking knowledge. He previously held the position of Global Director: Mining and Mineral Processing at WorleyParsons (formerly TWP) for 19 years. He played an integral part in steering TWP through a major growth phase, culminating in its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2008.

The first 13 years of his career was spent as an engineer on operations and building shaft sinking capital projects for Gold Fields in South Africa.

Murray has worked on projects for most of his career and has always had a passion for shaft sinking projects. Notably, in his 35 years in the mining industry he has excelled thanks to is his ability to understand not only technical problems but to relate them to financial/commercial solutions and thereby guides teams to a solution that best addresses these important issues.

Murray is a frequent speaker at shaft sinking conferences and has a passion in sharing his knowledge and his experience in Shaft Sinking.
