Women in Mining
UMS is changing mindsets and shaking up stereotypes. The mining industry is not just for men, and our female employees are making as valuable a contribution to our company’s success as their male counterparts, from Cape Town to Kuruman.
Meet Malerato Tsipane, who works for UMS Shaft Sinkers as an electrician. Malerato is responsible for the maintenance of all the portable electrical equipment for a shaft refurbishment project in Hotazel near Kuruman.
It’s not first time she has worked for UMS, having been awarded a learnership from Shaft Sinkers in 2008 and working for the company until 2013. In 2019 she re-joined UMS for the project in Kuruman.
“I’m glad to work for UMS again as they gave me an opportunity with the learnership and then hired me. I’m able to put food on the table because of UMS Shaft Sinkers.”
